Why register
For people working in regulated activity, VBS registration will be required by law. There will be penalties for employers who employ staff/volunteers undertaking regulated activity who are not ISA registered. For workers who do not quite meet the definition of regulated activity (e.g. if they undertake the work less frequently than once a week), then employers can use their discretion as to whether they require them to register.
The benefits of VBS Registration will be;
• Ongoing monitoring - if new information is received that indicates a person is unsuitable for working with the vulnerable, then employers will be notified of their change in
status.
• One off process – unlike CRB checks, VBS Registration will be portable because the registration relates to the person rather than the role.
• Vetting decisions made by experienced professionals – some employers are not trained in risk assessment and may find it difficult to judge an applicant’s suitability given their
criminal record history.
• Greater sharing of information – Employers are now obliged to refer information about an employee to the ISA if they have put a child/vulnerable adult at risk of harm.
