Why undertake CRB checks?
CRB checks form a vital part of the recruitment process, enabling employers to assess if an applicant is suitable for a particular role. If an applicant wishes to work with children or vulnerable adults then the only way an employer can check if they are barred from working with either of these groups, is by carrying out a CRB check.
CRB checks are only available where an employer is entitled to ask exempted questions under the Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. This includes organisations whose employees or volunteers work with children or vulnerable adults. If the CRB check shows that an applicant does have a criminal record then the employer must consider whether it is relevant to what they have applied to do.
To get a CRB check done, the organisation must support the applicant with completing and verifying the application form before sending it to the relevant CRB Registered Body where it will be processed, countersigned and forwarded to the CRB for the approriate disclosure check. Note that only CRB registered bodes are allowed to countersign application forms before they are submitted, so do not attempt to countersign or send the forms directly to the CRB unless you are authorised to do so. CAS is the CRB Regsitered Body of choice for a growing number of Christian denominations, independent churches and organisations.
