CRB Disclosure Checks FAQs

Here are the most frequently asked questions people ask us about the CRB process.

How long will the CRB check take?

CAS aims to process all applications with 5 days of receipt (though they are often turned around within 1-2 days.)  The CRB then takes an average of 4 weeks to carry out their checks and print the Disclosure certificates.  Enhanced Disclosures take longer than Standard Disclosures because the local police forces also need to check their records.  The Police forces have up to 60 days in which to complete their checks.

What checks do the CRB carry out?

For an Enhanced Disclosure the CRB check the applicants details against the Police National Computer to see if they have any convictions , cautions, reprimands or warnings.  They will search the ISA Childrens Barred list and/or the ISA Vulnerable Adults Barred List as requested.  Lastly the local police force(s) will check their records to see if they hold any other relevant information about the applicant.

For a Standard Disclosure, the CRB only check the Police National Computer.

When is a Standard level of Disclosure appropriate?

A Standard Disclosure is appropriate for a  very limited range of roles, including professions such as Traffic Wardens, Bouncers and people working in Financial Services.  Please click here for further details. Standard Disclosures are not suitable for anyone working with children and/or vulnerable adults as they do not check the barred lists or provide non-conviction information from the local police.

Who receives a Disclosure certifciate?

The CRB print two copies of the Disclosure certificate.  One goes to the applicant, at the address they entered as their current address on the application form, and the other is sent to the countersignatory from CAS.

Will the CRB reprint my Disclosure certificate?

The CRB will only reprint a Disclosure certificate if you have never received it (not if you have lost it) and if you notify them within 90 days of the date of issue.  Your church should not require the actual certifcate because CAS will send them a clearance letter, but if you require a certificate for another reason, you may need to make a fresh application.

Are CRB checks compulsory?

For some professions CRB checks are a legal requirement, but for most they are good practice.  Your church/organisation may decide that compulsory CRB checking is part of their recruitment policy and that you cannot start work without one.

Cost of a CRB check

A CRB is free of charge for volunteers working with children or vulnerable adults, however it will cost £44 for anyone working in paid employment (from 6 April 2011).

How can I track my application?

You will need to make a note of the Form Reference number before you submit your application.  Then using that and your date of birth you can follow the progress of your appplication once it reaches the CRB by using the CRB's tracking service, .https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/enquiry/enquirySearch.do If you don't have access to the internet, then you can ring CAS and we can check the progress for you.
