CAS Procedures :-)

All applications that are processed by CAS for the member church organisations would follow this procedure:

INFORMATION FOR THE APPLICANT:

You should ask your employer, minister or overseer at which level you should be applying for a disclosure – Enhanced or Standard.
Guidance on this is in your denomination/ organisation’ literature or on their website. In broad terms the CRB recquire that for an Enhanced Disclosure you need to be in regular face to face contact with children, young people or vulnerable adults; having responsibility for or potential for being in sole charge. The Standard Disclosure is recommended for those with less frequent contact and less responsibility for children such as; caretakers or cleaners.
You need to obtain a form – either from your own denomination or the CAS office (0207 467 5216). Methodist may request application packs (any number) from MPH on 01733 325002, www.mph.org.uk or sales@mph.org.uk. Baptists can request application packs by telephoning 01235 517708.  In addition, you should be given the CAS form which you and the verifier complete and the Documentary Evidence Sheet which are necessary for us to process your application.  These forms should be found in the denominational literature or on your relevant denomination/organisations website.

INFORMATION FOR THE VERIFIER:
Guidance for Verifiers - updated January 2008 (PDF)
Checking Identity documentation guidance - updated January 2007 (PDF)
As someone authenticating the ID for a CRB check you are acting with reponsibility in the process of recruiting a volunteer or staff member. Your organisation should already have had completed application forms from the applicant and referees should be followed up. A job description should also have been given to the applicant, for a paid or a voluntary post.
These procedures are required to fulfill the CRB Code of Practice but they are also essential for safer recruitment.
As a verifier you will need to check the applicant's identity documents. A list of acceptable documents and details of the number of documents you are required to check are shown on the Documentary Evidence Sheet. At least one document must show the applicant's current address and at least one must show their date of birth. Where possible one of the documents should also show a photograph. From time to time the CRB add new documents to the list of those that they will accept.  Please click here to see the latest CRB Guidance.
You need to complete section X of the CRB form and both the CAS forms.
If you are unsure whether your denomination has you listed as an authorised Verifier, telephone CAS (0207 467 5216)before completing any forms or sending them to the CAS.

CAS FORMS:

The CAS form is necessary as we act on behalf of 11 denominations and have thousands of verifiers throughout the country. This form tells us who the verifier is and certifies the verifier has seen the applicant and suitable documents.
The Documentary Evidence Sheet (completed by the Verifier) is for our CAS countersignatories in order to tells us exactly which documents have been checked as the CRB form does not have space for them all. CRBS (Scotland only) does not require a DES.
The CAS form and DES are the only forms that the verifier signs.

The Continuation Sheet - This should be used when your address history in Section A and D do not date back five years.
CRB (England and Wales) - The verifier should enter their name at line 16 in section X of the form but should not sign section Y. Only the CAS Countersignatories approved by CRB do section Y.
CRBS (Disclosure Scotland) – The verifier should complete a CAS form and a Documentary Evidence Sheet for Scotland.
