Background to CAS

HISTORY

The Churches Agency for Safeguarding (CAS) has been set up in consultation with Churches Together in England (CTE) and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI). It began work in the early part of 2002 and at that time had a founding document which was agreed by all members.

In the first two years of operation the CAS handled around 8,000 disclosures these were mainly on new workers and volunteers in the churches. In November 2003 the CAS members group decided to open up the applications to existing workers and volunteers in a phased programme from January 2004. This means that we are now handling over 20,000 disclosures from Criminal Records Burueau or the Disclosure Scotland per year.

The churches in membership of CAS are listed on this page of our website. 
The agency is able to serve member churches in England, Scotland and Wales and recognised church organisations of charities which are linked with one or more church within CTE, CTBI or the Free churches group.
